Schools often close because of bad weather, but they may also close because there is no power or because of a problem with safety.

There are several ways to find out if your local school is closed. Try not to call the school to ask. Check these other sources where schools will post information:

• TV and radio news announcements. 

• School and school district websites. 

• Telephone, email, or text alerts. 

Sometimes school ends early. Schools will dismiss children early if the weather gets bad during the day or if school is no longer safe.

Please talk with your child about where he or she should go in case school ends early. When school ends early, children need to know where to go. Will a parent be home? Is a grandparent available? Do children need a house key?

Make sure your child knows what to do in case school lets out early. Your child needs to know the plans you have made. Your child may be able to go to a friend’s home or neighbor’s home. Talk with your child about what your family’s plan is when school is dismissed early.

Closing school is not an easy decision for schools, but you and your child can be prepared.
